Detroit Box Alarm Kimberly Ct and Grand River 9/20/09 : On Sunday, September 20, 2009 companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Kimberly Court and Grand River for the report of a dwelling fire.  While enroute to the scene E42 reported to Central Office that the had heavy smoke showing, arriving on the scene they reported a vacant two story dwelling fully involved and requested that the second arriving Engine be prepared to dump it monitor.  Companies were forced into a defensive only operation; E39 dumped its monitor on the dwelling and L28 set up for tower operations.  C5 requested a 4th Engine for RIT and had the third arriving Engine stretch into L28.  Companies worked to keep the fire from spreading to the dwelling on either side of the fire due to the extreme radiant heat.  Crews worked through the night to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm Charlevoix and McDougall 9/15/09 : On Tuesday September 15th, 2009 companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Joseph Campau and Benson for a reported vacant dwelling down the street on fire.  C1 reported to Central Office that he could see it from Quarters and the first Engine would be stretching.  E9 arrived on the scene reported a fire in a vacant dwelling and they were stretching on Charlevoix between Joseph Campau and McDougall.  C1 reported a totally involved vacant dwelling and requested that the second and third engines dump their monitors, and requested that Central Office dispatch a 4th engine for RIT.  E1 was ordered to the corner Joseph Campau and Charlevoix to stretch into L6 for tower operations.  Companies reported that they also had a vacant commercial 20x40 that was attached to the dwelling going.  Having no exposures on either side of the fire the decision was made to let both structures burn and fight these fires defensively.  E1/5(RIT)/9/23 L6/10 S3 and C1 worked through the morning to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm 14415 Fordham 9/14/09 : On Monday September 14th, 2009 companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Chalmers and Fordham on the report of a vacant dwelling on fire.  Coming out of Quarters E50 report they could see it and the first engine would be stretching.  While enroute to the fire C9 requested that Central Office dispatch a 4th Engine on the box alarm.  First arriving companies report that the fire was on Fordham east of Chalmers, crews made an aggressive interior attack and were able to control this fire within an hour, using 4 1 ¾” hose lines stretched from E50 and E46.  E46/50/58/60 L23 S6 C9 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 8938-40 Chene 9-11-09 : On Friday September 11, 2009 companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Chene and E. Alexandrine on the report of smoke coming from an abandoned warehouse.  E23 arrived on the scene and reported that they had smoke coming from a vacant commercial building and they were stretching.  The officer of E23 requested that Central Office advise Squad 2 that they were going to be needed to force entry into the building.  L10’s crew gained access to the roof an performed vertical ventilation operations.  E5/9/23 L10 S2 C1 worked for over a half hour to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm Mitchell and McLean 9/10/09 : On Thursday September 10, 2009 companies from the 8th Battalion responded to the area of Joseph Campau and McLean on the report of a dwelling fire.  Upon arrival of L30 they reported they had a dwelling fully involved and advised companies to enter the fire from Mitchell.  While enroute to the Box Alarm E46 reported they were held up by a train and would be delayed to the scene, Central Office dispatched E17 on the Box Alarm.  C8 reported a totally involved 1.5 story dwelling and that he would utilize E46 as the RIT when they arrived on the scene.  E17/23/35/46 L30 S3 C8 worked for over an hour to bring this fire under control.

Detroit 2nd Alarm 1012 Eastlawn 9/3/09 : On Thursday, September 3 2009, around 1110 hours, companies from the 6th Battalion responded to Eastlawn and E. Jefferson on the report of a vacant apartment building on fire.  E38 arrived on the scene and reported that they were stretching on a vacant apartment building.  Upon arrival of L14 they requested that Central Office dispatch an additional Engine and Truck on the box.  Central dispatched E58 and L31 on the request of L14; C6 reported a vacant 4 story apartment building 40x80 with fire on the 4th floor and through the roof and requested a Platform.  L6 was dispatched as the Platform on orders of C6.  S3 made entry on the rear “B” side of the building and reported that the fire was through the roof and the 4th floor was completely involved, an evacuation signal was given, C6 ordered that L31 playaway on the A-B side of the building, L6 was placed at the A-D side of the building.  At 1145 hours C6 requested that Central Office transmit a 2nd Alarm at Eastlawn and E. Jefferson.  Crews worked for over 2 hours to bring this fire under control.  Box Alarm companies – E9/38/46 L14 S3 C6, additional companies above the Box Alarm – E58 L6/31 S6, 2nd Alarm companies – E1/23/60 L10 S2 Car 203.

Detroit Box Alarm 5972 Maryland 9/2/09 : On Wednesday, September 02, 2009 companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Maryland and Linville on the report of a dwelling fire.  While enroute to the scene Central Office notified companies of possible people trapped in the dwelling and of shots fired in the area.  C9 requested that Central dispatch EMS along with DPD.  Engine 58 reported they could see it and the first Engine would be stretching.  E52 arrived on the scene and reported they were stretching and that it appeared that everyone was out of the dwelling.  According to the occupants of the dwelling someone had thrown a fire bomb into the upper story of the 2.5 frame dwelling.  Companies had heavy fire on the A-B corner of the dwelling, E50/52/58 L23 S6 C9 worked to bring this fire under control in less than 30 minutes.  DFD EMS along with an EMS Supervisor and Detroit Police assisted Fire Companies at this scene.  One injured civilian declined transport for smoke inhalation.

Detroit Box Alarm Honorah and Pitt 9-1-09 : On Tuesday, September 1 2009, companies from the 7th Battalion responded to the area of Honorah and Pitt on the report of a vacant dwelling on fire.  E33 reported they were stretching on a dwelling that was going through the roof.  C7 reported a 1.5 story dwelling under construction with fire through the roof and requested that Central Office dispatch a 4th company as RIT.  E27/29/33/34(RIT) L13 S4 C7 worked for over an hour to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm 2161 Garland 8/26/09 : On Wednesday, August 25th 2009, companies from the 6th Battalion responded to the area of Garland and Kercheval on the report of a dwelling fire.  Arriving on the scene E32 reported a vacant dwelling totally involved and they were stretching.  Upon arrival of C6 crews were ordered to let the structure burn, there were no exposures on either side of the dwelling.  C6 informed Central Office that he had a vacant dwelling totally involved, and ordered S3 back in service.  The structure burned for approximately 30 minutes before collapsing.  Crews from E9/32/38 and L14 used 2, 1 ¾” hose lines, 1, 2 ½” hose line, and the monitor from E32 to control this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm Burns and Lambert 8/19/09 : On Wednesday August 19th, 2009 companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Burns and Lambert on the report of a dwelling fire.  Arriving on the scene E46 report smoke showing from a vacant dwelling and they where stretching.  C1 reported fire in a vacant 1.5 story dwelling and requested an additional company for RIT.  Crew worked for a half hour to bring this fire under control.  E9/23/46/52(RIT) L19 S3 and C1 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 7441-43 Churchill 8/10/09 : On Monday August 10th, 2009 companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Churchill and W. Bethune for a reported dwelling fire.  Engine 39 reported smoke showing and they were stretching on a vacant 2 family flat.  Arriving on the scene C8 reported a vacant 2 family flat with fire in the upper flat.  E35 reported problems finding the stairs into the attic space, and L7 was deployed to the roof for vertical ventilation operations.  Central Office dispatched E5 as the 4th company on the box alarm for RIT. E5/17/35/39 L7 S4 C5 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 3926 Kensington 8/10/09 : On Monday August 10th, 2009 companies from the 6th Battalion responded to the area of Kensington and Rosewood on the report of a dwelling fire.  Arriving on the scene E52 reported a occupied 1.5 story dwelling going, and they were stretching.  Central Office notified C6 they were sending E32 as the 4th company on the box alarm for RIT.  Fire was contained to the upstairs of the dwelling and crews made a quick knock down of the fire.  E32/38/52/58 L31 S6 C6 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 12376 Gratiot 8/9/09 : On Sunday August 9th, 2009 companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Gratiot and Filbert on the report of a commercial building on fire.  E50 arrived on the scene reporting an occupied commercial building with smoke showing.  C9 upon arrival reported a occupied commercial building 1 story 50x100, with heavy smoke conditions and requested a second Truck and Squad to the scene.  Crews attempted an interior attack but were forced out due to heavy heat from the tires in the building and rapidly deteriorating conditions.  L23 was set up on the “A-B” corner and deployed its ladder pipe into the “B-C” corner where the fire had vented through the roof.  Early into the operation the roof collapsed, and crews were forced into a defensive operation.  This fire was fought with 2 ladder pipes, a ground monitor, several 2 ½” hose lines, and numerous 1 ¾” hand lines.  Crews worked through the night to control this fire.  E50/52/58/60 L19/23 S3/6 and C9 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 4507-4517 Fischer 8/8/09 : On Saturday August 8, 2009, companies from the 6th Battalion responded to the area of Fischer and E. Canfield on the report of a dwelling fire.  Arriving on the scene Engine 23 reported they were stretching on a dwelling, Central Office dispatched L6 as the second truck on the box.  C6 reported fire in a 2 story dwelling and requested an additional Engine to the report to E. Forest and Fischer.  Crews were hampered by heavy smoke, and rapidly deteriorating conditions in the fire building.  Fire quickly extended to the occupied dwellings on either side of the original fire building.  E9/23/32 L6/10 S3 and C6 worked for over 2 hours to bring these fires under control.

Detroit Box Alarm Byron and Pingree 8/5/09 : On Wednesday August 5, 2009 companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Lee Place and Harmon Court for a reported dwelling fire.  Companies reported smoke showing on Lee Place and were stretching.  During the course of attacking this fire, 5th Battalion companies reported what appeared to be an apartment building fire on Byron and W. Pingree.
Squad 4 left the scene on Lee Place and responded to Byron to investigate the fire.  Upon arrival Squad 4 requested that Central Office transmit a Box Alarm assignment to Byron and W. Pingree for a two family flat with heavy smoke and fire showing from the 2nd floor rear.
In all 5 Engines, 2 Trucks, 2 Squads and 2 Battalion Chiefs worked at these 2 fires which where blocks apart.

Detroit Box Alarm 2530-32 Taylor 8/2/09 : On Sunday August 2nd, 2009 around 1820 hours companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Clairmont and Linwood on the report of a dwelling on fire.  E39 arrived on the scene reported smoke showing and they were stretching on a vacant 2 family flat on Taylor.  C5 reported a vacant 2 family flat with fire on the 2nd floor and requested an additional company as RIT.  Crews worked for over a half hour to control this fire with the aid of two 1 ¾” hand lines.

Detroit Box Alarm 8034 & 8040 Sarena 7/24/09 : On Friday July 24, 2009, companies from the 7th Battalion responded to the area Wheeler and McDonald on a reported dwelling fire.  E34 arrived on the scene and reported a dwelling fire on Sarena and they were stretching on 2 dwellings.  The fire was quickly knocked down using two handlines, E10/34/42 L22 S4 and C7 worked at this fire.

Detroit 2nd Alarm Vacant Douglas Brewster Projects 7/20/09 : On Monday July 20, 2009, companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of John R and Watson on the report of a commercial building fire.  Car 203 reported heavy smoke in the area and requested extra companies to be dispatched on the Box Alarm assignment.  E5 reported the fire in the vacant Douglas Brewster Projects at Beaubien and Division.  Companies reported numerous problems accessing the scene.  Car 203 (Senior Battalion Chief) arrived on the scene and assumed command, reporting a vacant 2 story project, 40x200 with the second floor going and fire through the roof, and ordered a 2nd Alarm.  Crews stretched numerous handlines to attack the fire, and utilized L6 for an elevated waterway.  Box Alarm companies E1/5/17 L20 S2 and C5, 2nd Alarm companies E9/10/23 L6/7/17 C1 and Car 203.  Companies worked for over 3.5 hours to control this fire, smoke from this fire could be seen up to 10 miles away.

Detroit 2nd Alarm Vacant Packard Automotive Plant E. Grand Blvd and Concord 6/27/09 : On Sunday June 28th, 2009 companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of E. Grand Blvd and Concord for a reported fire at the vacant Packard Car Company Assembly Plant.  Upon arrival companies reported heavy smoke coming from 102 year old structure.  Chief 1 requested a 2nd Alarm, and by orders of Car 200, Chief of the Detroit Fire Department, no firefighter was to enter the structure.  
Built in 1907 the Packard Car Company operated until 1956, building cars and planes for the War effort during WWI.  After the Packard Company ceased operation the building was left vacant until the late 1970’s when it was revived as the “Motor City Industrial Park” until the late 1980’s.
Since the beginning of 2009 many small fires have been set in the structure.  About 2 weeks ago another fire was set and crews were ordered not to enter the structure and to let the fire burn out.  The fire raged most of the day and through the night before it eventually burned out. 
Crews worked through the night and continue to work into Monday June 29, 2009.  Many fire companies from the Detroit Fire Department operated at this fire, using 2 ladder pipes, 1 ariel platform and numerous ground and rig mounted monitors.

Detroit Box Alarm Seminole and Lambert 6-13-09 : On Saturday, June 13th, 2009 around 2240 hours, companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Seminole and Lambert on the report of a dwelling fire.  E23 arrived on scene and reported they were stretching on the upper rear of a 2 family flat.  Crews made a quick knock down and were picking up within a half hour of the initial call.  E9/23/46 L10 S3 and C1 responded to this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm 6481 Burns 6-13-09 : On Saturday, June 13th, 2009 around 2145 hours, companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Burns and Harper on the report of a dwelling fire.  E46 reported a fire in the rear of a 1.5 story frame dwelling and they were stretching.  L16 was placed into operation and crews performed vertical ventilation operations.  Crews were pulled off the roof midway through the operation due to changing conditions.  E23/46/50 L16/19 S3 and C9 worked at this fire.

Detroit Box Alarm **Double Fatal** 2305-09 W. Philadelphia 6/13/09 : On Saturday June 13th, 2009, around 2015 hours, companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of W. Philadelphia   and 14th, on a report of a 2 family flat on fire.  While enroute to the fire, Central Office reported possible civilians trapped in the dwelling, and EMS was ordered for the scene.  Arriving on the scene E39 reported a dwelling fire and they were stretching.  Chief 5 reported fire in the upper flat, E39 interior crew reported a fire in the kitchen and they were conducting searches for the missing civilians.  Two victims were found in the upper flat.  Chief 5 requested an additional EMS to the scene for the second victim.  E17/35/39 L7 S4 C5, Medic 10, an additional Medic Unit and EMS Supervisor worked at this scene.

Detroit Box Alarm 3106 Canton 4/23/09 : On Thursday, April 23, 2009 around 1400 hours, companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Canton and Benson for the report of a vacant commercial building fire.  Crews arrived on the scene to find a vacant 2 story apartment building with fire on the “B” side of the structure.  A quick knock down was made.  E23/32/46/9(RIT) L10 S3 and C1 worked on the box.

Detroit 2nd Alarm 5490 Missouri 4/23/09 : On Thursday, April 23, 2009 around 1150 hours, companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the report of a vacant commercial building fire in the area of Grand River and the I-94 Service Drive.  While enroute to the fire S4 report that they had heavy smoke in the area of 94 and Grand River.  E39 arrived on the scene and reported a vacant commercial building going through out and they were stretching.  Upon arriving on the scene E5 reported to Central Office that they also had a 2 story dwelling going and they were stretching.  C5 reported a 125x75 vacant commercial building with an attached 2.5 story vacant dwelling at the corner of the I-94 Service Drive and Missouri going through out and requested a 2nd alarm.  C5 requested that the platform (L17) come to the fire from the east along the service drive to utilize their platform.  Six Engines, three Ladder Trucks, two Squads and three Battalion Chiefs, with three Engines stretched and numerous hose lines laid out, worked for 2 hours to bring this fire under control.  Box Alarm assignment; E5/17/39 L7 S4 and C5, 2nd Alarm assignment; E10/35/42 L17/20 S2 C7 and the Senior Battalion Chief (203).

Detroit Box Alarm McDougall and Lawley 4/22/09 : On April 22, 2009 around 1150 hours, companies from the 8th Battalion responded to the report of a dwelling fire in the area of McDougall and Lawley.  E35 reported smoke showing and they were stretching, while enroute C5 requested Central Office dispatch a 4th Engine for RIT.  E40 was dispatched as the RIT Engine.  Crew made an aggressive interior attack but were unable access the upper floor due the structural instability.  L30’s aerial was put into operation and crews set up for water tower operations.  A 1 ¾” hose line was stretched up the tower and crews were able to knock down the fire with that hose line.  Crews worked for over an hour to bring this fire under control.  E23/35/40(RIT)/44 L30 S3 C5 worked at this box.

Detroit Box Alarm 11803 Evanston 4/21/09 : On Tuesday April 21, 2009 around 1300 hours, companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the report of a dwelling fire in the area of Evanston between Gunston and Barett.  While enroute E46 reported smoke showing, arriving on the scene E46 reported a two story dwelling with fire on the second floor.  E46/50/52 L19 S6 and C9 worked at this box.

Detroit Box Alarm 10967 Beaconsfield 4/21/09 : On Tuesday April 21, 2009 around 0945 hours, companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Beaconsfield and Grayton for a reported dwelling fire.  E58 first to arrive on the scene reported they had a fire in a dwelling and would be stretching.  A small fire in the upstairs bedroom was found and quickly extinguished.  E50/52/58 L23 S6 and C9 all worked at this box.

Detroit Box Alarm 15810 E. State Fair 3/30/09 : On Monday March 30th, 2009 around 1400 hours, companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of E. State Fair and Rex on the report of a dwelling fire.  E50 arrived on the scene and reported a dwelling fire and that they were stretching.  A quick knock down was made, and companies returned in service with in the hour.  E50/58/60 L23 S6 C9 on the box.

Detroit Box Alarm 9148 Phillip 3/30/09 : On Monday March 30th, 2009 around 0940 hours, companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Phillip and Wade for the report of a dwelling fire.  While enroute L23 reported smoke showing and that the first engine would stretch.  E46 arrived on the scene and reported that they were stretching.  L23 performed vertical ventilation and a quick knock down was made.  E46/50/58 L23 S6 C9 on the box.

Detroit 2nd Alarm 8240 Grand River 3/21/09 : On Saturday March 21st, 2009 around 1440 hours companies from the 5th Battalion responded to 8240 Grand River at the Abundant Life Christian Ministry Church.  Engine 42 reported heavy smoke showing and requested an additional Engine and Truck enroute.  On arrival of Engine 42 they reported an occupied church with heavy smoke from the cockloft and requested a 2nd alarm.  Crews quickly made an aggressive interior attack and had the fire knocked down in less than an hour, using 4, 1 ¾” handlines.  In all 4 Engines stretched, 1 Ladder to the roof, and 1 ladder with ladder pipe deployed.  E17/34/39/40/42 L6/21/28 S4/5 C5/7 Car203 worked at the 2nd alarm.

Detroit Box Alarm Charest and Davidson 3/12/09 : On Thursday March 12th, 2009 around 1200 hours, companies from the 8th Battalion responded to the area Gallagher and Davidson for a reported dwelling fire.  On arrival of E56 they found the fire on Charest between Lawley and Davison and reported a 2 family flat full involved.  They requested the 2nd arriving Engine dump their monitor on the fire.  Crew attempted an interior attack but where pulled out by C8 when the roof showed signs of failure.  L30’s water tower was put into operation and the roof of the structure collapsed into the second floor.  C8 requested an additional company for RIT, L18 was dispatched as RIT.  Companies work for over an hour before this fire was declared under control. E25/44/56, L18/30, S5, C8 all worked at this fire.

Detroit City Airport Aircraft Emergency + Haz-Mat Level 3 3/11/09 : On Wednesday March 11th, 2009 around 1315 hours Detroit City Airport Tower requested a Fire Department standby for the inbound aircraft emergency, Cessna type aircraft with one soul on board.  The pilot had declared an emergency while setting up to land because one of his landing gear had not deployed.  The pilot made several passes on runway 7 so the tower could visualize if his landing gear was stowed or deployed.  He stated that he had approximately one hour of fuel left and was attempting to burn off as much as possible before attempting an emergency landing.  During the planes several passes the tower notified the pilot that his right rear gear was down but not locked.  Detroit Fire Communications responded 4 Engines, 2 Ladders, 2 Squads and a Battalion Chief initially on the run.  However E20 the Airport Crash Rig initially did not respond because it was closed due to manpower.  After receiving a briefing from City Airport personal Chief 9 advised Central Office that he was declaring this incident a Haz-Mat Level 3 and requested that Central find a Certified Airport FEO to make E20’s quarters and put the Airport Crash rig in service, he also requested Detroit Police to close Conner Ave., between Gratiot to the south and McNichols (6 Mile) to the north.  E60 advised Central that they had a Certified Airport FEO and would make E20’s quarters and pick up the Airport Crash rig. After approximately a half hour of circling the airport the pilot made to the decision to make an emergency landing.  He requested runway 33 due to the crosswind effect, he wanted to land on his nose and left gear hoping the wind out of the west would keep his right side elevated until he could slow down trying to minimize the damage to the aircraft.  The aircraft landed on runaway 33 around 1400 hours, he was able to maintain control of the aircraft through the initial landing but spun off into the grass between the runway and taxiway.  The pilot was not injured and walked away from the incident.  E23/46/58/60/20(with E60’s crew), HMU1, L19/23, S3/6, C9, Car 202, 703, 704 and Car 1200(Department Chaplin) along with multiple EMS Units and EMS supervisors worked at this incident.

Detroit Box Alarm 7428-38 Maywood 3/2/09 : On Monday March 2nd, 2008 around 3:30pm companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Maywood and St. Cyril for a report of a vacant 2 family flat on fire.  While enroute L16 reported smoke showing and the first engine would stretch.  E46 arrived on the scene and stretched on a 2 family flat located at 7436-38 Maywood.  During the initial attack on the fire building the resident at 7428 Maywood reported that they had smoke in the upstairs of their home.  Crews found heavy extension into the occupied dwelling and requested an additional Engine and Truck on the box.  E9/17/23/46/50 L10/16/19 S3 and C5 worked for over an hour to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm 6242 Whitewood 2/10/09 : On Tuesday February 10, 2009 at 1500 hours, companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Whitewood and Moore Place for the report of a dwelling fire.  S4 arrived on the scene and reported an occupied 2 story dwelling with the upper floor fully involved, and requested EMS to the scene for a possible injured civilian.  E34 stretched and the fire was quickly knocked down.  E10/34/42 L21 S4 C5 on the box.

Detroit Box Alarm 5556 Whitfield 2/10/09 : On Tuesday February 10, 2009 at 1110 hours, companies from the 2nd Battalion responded to 5556 Whitfield for the report of a 2 flat on fire.   First arriving companies reported the upstairs of two flat involved.  C2 requested a 4th company for R.I.T.  E34/42/49 L21/28(RIT) S4 C2 on the box.

Detroit 2nd Alarm 5013 Mitchell 1/28/09 : On January 28, 2009 at 0610 hours while enroute to an apartment building fire at 1 Lafayette Plaisance Squad 3 reported a fire in a 2 flat one block north of McDougall at E. Warren, and requested that Detroit Central Office dispatch a box alarm there.  Central advised S3 that they had the location as Mitchell and E. Warren and they where dispatching the box.  E23 arrived on the scene and reported 2 two family flats and a commercial building going, and requested a “silent” 2nd alarm, but delayed that order and requested an additional 3 Engines and 1 Truck to the scene.  Arriving on the scene Deputy Chief 202 reported fire in 2 two family flats with fire on the 2nd floor both dwellings and fire on the 2nd floor of a 4 story 75x200 vacant commercial building, and ordered an evacuation of the dwellings.  At 0630 hours Deputy Chief 202 requested a 2nd Alarm be transmitted but requested that Central only send an extra Battalion Chief to the scene.  E23/32/35/46/50/58 L7/10/16 S3/6 C5/6 Senior Chief 203 and Deputy Chief 202 worked for over an hour to bring this fire under control.  At 0715 hours the 2nd Alarm was downgraded to a Box Alarm level by orders of Deputy Chief 202, 2nd Alarm companies were picked up and relief crews were ordered for the Box.

Detroit Box Alarm Concord and Medbury 1/15/09 : On Thursday January 15, 2009 around 1500 hours companies from the 1st Battalion responded to the area of Concord and Medbury on a reported dwelling fire.  Upon arrival of E23 they reported a fire in the vacant Packard Automobile Plant, the officer of E23 immediately requested an addition ladder truck to the scene.  Companies stated that they had smoke coming from all floors of the 1500 by 500 vacant WWI type construction building.  Ladder 16 was placed at the north end of the building on the Concord side where the majority of the smoke was concentrated and put their aerial to the 3rd floor.  Ladder 10 was placed in the middle of the building at Medbury and Concord and also placed their aerial at the 3rd floor.  The crews of E23 and S3 made entry into the building to investigate the seat of the fire; they reported numerous fires set on the 3rd and 4th floors on the B, C, and D sides of the building.  E46 was stretched and S3 advanced 2, 1 3/4” lines.   Car 202 (Deputy Fire Chief of the Eastside) arrived on scene and ordered Chief 1 to evacuate all personnel from the building.  The order was given and crews abandoned the fire attack on the D side of the building.  E23 and S3 had exited the building on the B side and reported heavy smoke and fire on the 3rd floor C side and requested companies come to the B side.  E23 and S3 crews reentered the building on orders of Car 202 and E23 was stretched to a working hydrant on the I94 service drive.  Crews worked for approximately 2 hours to control this fire.  E9/23/46 L10/16 S3 C1 and Car202.

Detroit Box Alarm 12232 Klinger 1/15/09 : On Thursday January 15, 2009 around 1315 hours companies from the 8th Battalion responded to the area of Klinger and Carpenter for the report of a dwelling fire.  Upon arrival of E56 they advised that they had a fire in a vacant 2 story dwelling and that were stretching.  Fire was in the rear of the dwelling and had extended into the attic area.  E35/44/56 L30 S3 and C8 all worked at this fire for approximately a half hour.

Detroit Box Alarm 14833 Terry 1/15/09 : On Thursday January 15, 2009 around 1030 hours companies from the 4th Battalion responded to the area of Terry between Eaton and Chalfonte for the report of a dwelling fire.  E49 arrived on the scene and report that they would be stretching on a 2.5 story dwelling with the 2nd floor and attic going.  L27’s aerial was put into operation and vertical ventilation was performed.  Crews initially had a difficult time getting into the attic due to the smoke conditions.  C4 requested DTE to the scene for an illegal electrical hookup.  E30/40/49 L27 S1 C4 worked for approx 1 hour to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box Alarm Edgewood and Clarion 1/11/09 : On January 11th 2009, around 0900 hours companies from the 9th Battalion responded to the area of Edgewood and Milner for a report of a building on fire.  L19 arrived on the scene and reported a vacant commercial building going through out at Edgewood and Clarion.  Crews attempted to make an interior attack but were hampered heavy smoke conditions.  C9 requested an additional truck to the scene and pulled crews out of the building.  L19 and L31’s waterway were put into operation.  E23/46/50 L19/31 S3 and C9 all worked at this fire.

Detroit 2nd Alarm 13815 Gratiot 1/6/09 : On January 6 2009, around 1400 hours companies from the 9th Battalion responded to a report of a vacant hardware store on fire.  Enroute companies reported heavy smoke showing, C9 requested extra companies enroute.  Arriving on scene crews made an aggressive interior attack but where forced out due to heavy smoke and fire conditions.  Approx 20 minutes into the operation C9 requested a 2nd alarm.  While 2nd alarm companies where enroute the building collapsed.  Crews worked through night to bring this fire under control.

Detroit Box 5711 Chene 1/6/09 : On January 6th, 2009 around 1120 hours companies from the 5th Battalion responded to the area of Chene and E. Palmer for the report of a commercial building fire.  E23 initially reported no smoke showing, but on further investigation found light smoke at the rear of 5711 Chene.  Crews were hampered by the amount of debris in the building.  L10 and L7 were utilized, E23/9/17 all stretched on this box.  E5/9/17/23 L10/7 S3 C5 Car201 all worked at this fire, C5 requested E46 and L19 as extra companies for manpower.

Detroit Box 2743 Burnside 1/6/09 : On January 6th, 2009 around 1000 hours companies from the 8th Battalion responded to Burnside and Jos. Campau for the report of a dwelling fire.  E47 reported smoke showing and first engine would stretch.  E47 arrived on the scene and stretched but had water problems due to a bad hydrant.  E56 arrived second and stretched on a dwelling going throughout.  Companies requested EMS, initial reports of an injured civilian.  Crews were hampered by water problems, heavy smoke and fire, L30’s water tower was put into service and crews mad a defensive attack, major structural damage and collapse occurred approx 20 minutes into operations.  E35/44/47/56 L30 S3 C8 Car201 EMS and EMS Supervisor worked for over an hour and a half to bring this fire under control.
